So January has come and gone and it’s not been a bad month for Rolodecks. After quietly launching at the turn of the year, the response has been amazing. The feedback from fans and artists alike gives great motivation.
Rolodecks has been mentioned on both Nigerian and South African websites as well as starting this month out by receiving mention on South African radio, needless to say; it’s greatly pleasing but there is a whole lot of work yet to be done.
There are a lot of features planned for the coming months. One of which is the introduction of an artist embed widget that will allow artists and bloggers to embed small widgets that will allow them to both link to their Rolodecks artist profiles and the artist’s online presence. No more multiple hyperlinks to different sites for bloggers and journos. Along with that is the introduction of trend tracking of the statistics tracked by Rolodecks. Soon we’ll be showing you who has been making the greatest impact on digital & social media. Whilst an artist may be in the top 10 of the Rolodecks rankings that doesn’t mean that they are the one’s moving and shaking currently.
Lastly Rolodecks is going to soon have some support for mobile devices by way of some inclusion of responsive design ie: CSS3 @ media queries for those that are technically inclined.
Until next time, Discover Music.
It’s been 11 days since Rolodecks saw the bright light of public access. In that time, the site has been seen by individuals in 28 countries and thankfully received some very positive feedback from fans of music, bloggers, artist managers and artists themselves. To all of you that have seen what we’re doing and given your thumbs up, we thank you. For those that haven’t yet done so; you can feel free to do so now, keep up to date by following our twitter account @TeamRolodecks and go ahead and like our Facebook page; we’re grateful for your support.
So, EXACTLY WHAT IS Rolodecks?
The Short:
Rolodecks is a Music Artist Aggregation Platform. It aims to aggregate information about music artists into one place by using an artist’s online footprint (social media, blogs & news ). Artists are grouped by country, then made accessible and organised by different criteria including genres, trades, social presence and more. This allows users to keep track of and discover new artists and acts as well as gain new insight into artist influence, reach and relevance.
The Long:
Rolodecks was conceived with the intention of rectifying a problem seen in the African Music Industry where a country’s musical products are not known or easily accessible to music fans in other African countries or further abroad.
Rolodecks at present aims to provide a unified platform for African music artists to stand shoulder to shoulder with other African artists, something unique in today’s vast digital world. Signed and unsigned talent is aggregated, tracked and discoverable to the YOU, the music fan, the casual listener, the diasporan looking for a piece of home.
A Rolodecks artist profile is created using an artist’s existing social footprint. The main social services used for this are:
- Services making up the Social Media Index: Facebook, Twitter, LastFM, Soundcloud, Youtube
- Further Information: Reverbnation, Bandcamp, Myspace, Official FM
At present Rolodecks provides ranking for artists based on “lifetime” stats. This means that all the stats used to rank artists at present are cumulative stats. Soon there will be more information including monthly and perhaps even weekly tallies, but that’s something to be talked about closer to it’s fruition.
We want Rolodecks to become THE platform that fans consult when looking to find new music on the African continent & also allow artists to fully grasp the reach that they have with fans in comparison with other artists.
Well that’s it from me. Until next time, discover music.
So Rolodecks has been live in a real way for a few days and nothing major has broken yet. It feels a little strange to have the project out for the world to see, exciting but thrilling at the same time. Thrilling mostly because there are a lot of huge plans that are not yet in place for the site. Perhaps most importantly; the current database is nowhere near reflective of the vastness that is the African music artist pool. Growth however is a process so the weeks and months ahead will be very interesting. Hope you enjoy the ride with us.
